The Maldives Foreign Ministry said in a statement on November 3 that the recent meeting between Maldives High Commissioner to Pakistan Mohammed Thoha and Charge d’Afghanistan Ahmed Shakib was not approved by the Maldives government. Without elaborating, the statement said that appropriate action was taken against Thoha on Saturday.
Pakistani officials said they are aware that the Maldivian government recalled its ambassador from Pakistan without seeking approval from his government after he met the Afghan Taliban government’s top diplomat in Islamabad. The Maldives does not recognize the Taliban government which seized power in August 2021 after United States and NATO forces withdrew from the country. The Taliban has been widely isolated for human rights violations since the takeover, including restrictions on Afghan girls and women.

It states that, when questions arise about the representative character of a Government, the Maldives is guided by the practice adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. In line with this practice, the Maldives recognizes the government representing Afghanistan in the United Nations as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
