This mission was started in view of the rapid deteriorating situation in the sector, where there are reports that many Indian students may be injured in an attack near a medical student hostel on Keshawarz Street in Tehran.
Iran has opened its airspace to evacuate Indian citizens despite increasing tension with Israel as an exception to India. Three great air flights have been arranged to bring back around 1,000 Indian students from Iran’s Mashhad. The first of these flight is going to land in Delhi tonight. Officials of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi have confirmed that their Foreign Ministry is in direct contact with the Indian mission in Tehran about the injured students. However, the Government of India has not yet issued any official statement about the injured. The Ministry of External Affairs said that India gives top priority to the safety of Indian citizens abroad. It is estimated that there are currently 4,000 Indians in Iran, about half of which are students. On Tuesday, Indian authorities assisted 110 students living in northern Iran to cross the border and enter Armenia. From there, they reached Jerevan under the supervision of Indian diplomatic teams in both Tehran and Jerevan.
A special flight on the students left from Jerevan at 2:55 pm on June 18 and is expected to land in New Delhi on the morning of 19 June under the initial phase of Operation Sindhu. India has appreciated both Iran and Armenia for cooperation in making the evacuation process successful. India is transferring its citizens to safe areas from high -risk areas amidst the ongoing struggle in Iran.
