BJP leader Amit Malviya welcomed the High Court’s decision and called it a big setback for the Mamata Banerjee government. The Calcutta High Court in a historic judgment has ordered that the MNREGA scheme in West Bengal should be resumed from 1 August 2025.
The Calcutta High Court directed the Central Government to resume the distribution of MNREGA funds in West Bengal from August 1, as well as allowed the central government to take necessary security measures to prevent corruption. The next hearing of the case will be held after August 15. Bengal was to get allocation between 2022-23 and 2025-26. For the next six years from 2016, West Bengal was allocated Rs 50,593 crore under the 100 -day Action Plan (MGNREGA). Allegations of irregularities were reported in the works of only Rs 9.20 crore, against which action was also taken. All related documents and records have been handed over to the Ministry of Rural Development. The court highlighted that the 100-day action plan is a long-term, a project funded by the Center, where the money is transferred directly to the workers’ bank accounts. It emphasized the importance of resumption of the scheme in public interest. Chief Justice T.S. The Shivganam -led bench said that cases of misuse of funds have been proved in four districts, but it is unfair to suspend the entire plan for three years.
BJP leader Amit Malviya welcomed the High Court’s decision and called it a big setback for the Mamata Banerjee government. The Calcutta High Court in a historic judgment has ordered that the MNREGA scheme in West Bengal should be resumed from 1 August 2025. This is a major setback for the Mamta Banerjee government and a major victory in the fight against corruption. Posting on X, he said that this decision means: This scheme cannot be postponed indefinitely because the state has misused it. Now the central government will have control for strict monitoring – Mamta Banerjee will no longer be able to loot. No retrospective payment – only real beneficiaries will get new rights. All the money recovered from the scam will go to India’s accumulated fund, not in the TMC treasury. Since the Act has not been abolished itself, the benefits should reach the poor – and the court has ensured that they will do so. This is a strong slap on TMC’s corruption -filled governance. The poor of Bengal will now get what they have. But do not make any mistake – Mamta Banerjee will do anything to stop its implementation … because she cannot tolerate a system that she cannot manipulate.
The Trinamool Congress also welcomed the verdict and claimed that it proves the party’s stance right. TMC posted on X, “The Calcutta High Court has directed the Center to resume MNREGA in Bengal from August 1, which is a clear acceptance of injustice done to 59 lakh job card holders. Under the leadership of Mrs. Mamata Banerjee and Mr. Abhishek Banerjee, we fought tireless fight against this discrimination. Today’s decision proves our attitude and is an important victory for the people of Bengal.
