A Mumbai court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi to comment on praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Giving relief to suspended Azmi from Maharashtra Legislative Assembly till March 26, the court imposed some conditions and directed them to fill a bail bond of Rs 20,000. Last week, a case was registered against Azmi, MLA of Mankhurd-Shivaji Municipal Constituency of Metropolis at Marine Drive Police Station in South Mumbai for his comment to praise the Mughal emperor under the relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).

Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra unit president Azmi had said that India had borders to Afghanistan and Burma (Myanma) during Aurangzeb’s reign. Referring to Aurangzeb’s reign, Azmi claimed, “Our GDP (World GDP) was 24 percent and India was called a gold bird.” When asked about the fight between Aurangzeb and Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Azmi called it a “political fight”.
