Murshidabad Violence: Women’s Commission will investigate women’s oppression, inquiry committee formed

A delegation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) will visit violence affected areas in West Bengal and meet the victims. The delegation will reach Kolkata on Thursday evening and go to Malda on 18 April and Murshidabad on 19 April. The NCW Investigation Committee will investigate the Murshidabad violence and NCW President Vijaya Rahatkar will personally visit the violence affected areas and meet the victims. Last week, there were violent protests over the new Waqf (Amendment) Act in many areas of the district.

NCW Chairman Vijaya Rahatkar said that we have taken cognizance of all these incidents and the National Commission for Women (NCW) has constituted an inquiry committee. I myself will go to West Bengal and meet all those aggrieved women. I will also go to Murshidabad and Malda. There is an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among women. After understanding the situation, the Commission will take a decision on the matter. We will try to provide justice to all the women there.

The total number of arrests has so far crossed 200 in connection with the violence in some parts of Murshidabad district of West Bengal, a senior state police officer gave this information. The West Bengal Police on Wednesday announced the formation of a nine -member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the situation like violence and riots due to violent protests against the Waqf Amendment Act in the minority -dominated Murshidabad district on Wednesday. NCW on Wednesday announced the formation of an inquiry committee to investigate the violence.
The NCW said that the decision to form the inqu NCW’s statement said, “Hundreds of women have to flee due to violence, many of whom were forced to cross the Bhagirathi river in search of security, who are taking refuge in the nearby Malda district. These women have been fired from their homes, living in fear and uncertainty, facing unnecessary trauma and loss.”
