‘One Country One Election’ Bill does not violate any provision of the constitution: Attorney General

Attorney General R Venkatramani told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that the bills related to holding elections together do not violate any provision of the Constitution and are correct in terms of law. Sources gave this information.

Sources said that some legal experts appearing before the Joint Committee of Parliament shared the concerns of various members on some aspects of the Constitution Amendment Bill. At the same time, Venkataramani emphasized that no amendment in the proposed laws is required.

Opposition parties have described these bills as a violation of the constitution. However, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, DN Patel, who is currently the chairman of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, discussed the positive aspects of the “one nation one election” proposal as well as challenges in his presentation.

He said that this concept is good for the nation and any proposed law can always be improved. Sources said that when Patel quoted the global practice of holding elections together, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned whether countries like Sweden and Belgium could be compared to a country like India, Priyanka also said that all claims about the benefits of holding elections together are mostly estimated, because no studies have been done.

Sources said that Venkataramani told the members that he is the Attorney General of India and not the government. He probably made this comment to remove the notion that he would support the government’s opinion in the matter.

Committee Chairman and BJP MP PP Chaudhary told reporters that to hold elections simultaneously is in the interest of the country, and the committee is discussing the best ways to implement it.
