The former president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) and Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood, who moved forward in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is the main Punjabi face in the cabinet of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi MLA. This cabinet was sworn in on Thursday.
For the first time from Janakpuri, MLA Sood is known for his organization skills. He is currently in-charge of Goa BJP and co-content of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit. Like the new Chief Minister, Sood is also the former president of Delhi University Students Union. He won the student union election in 1989 and was elected president.
He has served in various positions including the National Secretary in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He became the General Secretary of the BJP’s Youth Branch Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 2003 and became its national vice -president within two years.
In December 2008, Sood was made the secretary of Delhi Pradesh BJP and the next year was made General Secretary. He was later appointed as Vice President of BJP’s state unit. He was elected Councilor in the then South Delhi Municipal Corporation in April 2012. He served as the leader of the House in this corporation.
Sood (58) is a merchant and has a degree of commerce. He has won the Janakpuri assembly seat with a margin of more than 18000 votes. According to the inner sources of the party, it is said that they have the confidence of senior leaders and they have been assigned important responsibilities before. Sources say they have a sweet relationship with the RSS. Sood took the oath of office in the name of his mother Sushila and father Madan Gopal on Thursday.
