Astana. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday described terrorism as a major concern for member countries at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and called for “meaningful” talks with the Taliban government of Afghanistan. Shahbaz, who arrived in Kazakhstan's capital Astana on Wednesday on a two-day official visit, represented Pakistan at the SCO summit. Leaders and diplomats from China, India, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan discussed economic and security cooperation at the summit.
In his address, Prime Minister Sharif stressed the importance of maintaining peace in the region for economic development, Geo News reported. “Establishing lasting peace in Afghanistan is the mainstay of this common objective,” he said. He said the international community should “meet their genuine economic and development needs through meaningful dialogue with the Afghan government.”
Sharif also said that the Afghan Taliban must take concrete steps to ensure that its soil is not used for terrorism against any other country. “All forms of terrorism, including sponsored terrorism, must be condemned in the strongest and most unequivocal terms,” he said. He said there was no justification for killing innocent people or raising fears of terrorism for political gains.
