PIL filed in court in fake liquor case, objection raised on giving Rs 10 lakh as compensation

A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking cancellation of the order of the state government to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to all the victims in the recent case of people dying due to consumption of spurious liquor in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. This PIL has been filed by Mohammed Gaus.

During the hearing on the petition, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Shafiq orally said that the amount of compensation is high. They also adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks.

The PIL said that the victims were not freedom fighters or social workers who lost their lives for the general public or society but they had committed an illegal act by consuming spurious liquor.

According to the petition filed on behalf of Gaus, drinking illicit liquor is illegal. The petition states that the state should not show mercy on those who drank illicit liquor and committed illegal acts…

He said that compensation should be given only to the victims of the accident and not to those who have done any illegal act for their pleasure. The petition said that the order to give compensation to all the victims of the liquor tragedy is unfair and arbitrary while the consumers of illicit liquor should not be given compensation and they should not be treated as victims.
