The Jharkhand High Court on Monday ordered senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear before the MP-MLA court in Chaibasa on August 6 in connection with the alleged derogatory remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha challenged the High Court on June 2 challenging the order of the special court, directed to appear before the court on 26 June.
Gandhi’s advocate told the High Court that his clients would not be able to appear on June 26 and asked for the date of August 6 in its place. The court accepted this request.
In the case of making alleged objectionable statements against BJP leaders, a person Pratap Kumar filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for a defamation speech during a public meeting in Chaibasa in 2018.
Rahul Gandhi’s petition stated that he had filed a petition in the Chaibasa court demanding an exemption from personal appearance, which is currently pending in the High Court.
The lower court was also informed that the petition for exemption from appearance is pending in the High Court, despite this the court did not give any relief to Gandhi and ordered him to appear personally.
Rahul Gandhi is facing criminal prosecution in the case, alleged that he had allegedly given a complete defamation statements for the purpose of deliberately tarnishing the image of Amit Shah.
