Newly appointed Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh of Delhi said on Saturday that the government is working towards making the transport sector profitable within a year. Along with this, he said, the national capital will get more than one thousand electric buses this month. In an interview, Singh said that the transport sector is currently running at a loss of Rs 235 crore. Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said that the government is working on a recovery scheme and aims to make the region profitable within a year. He stressed the need to make Delhi’s transport system more accessible and convenient to the public.

Singh said that we need to improve public transport so that people trust private vehicles less. Our first step will be to start electric buses in Delhi, followed by further improvement to strengthen the transport network. Pankaj Kumar Singh is one of the six cabinet ministers in the newly formed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s government. He has been appointed as ministers of transport, health and other departments. Regarding the Transport Department, Singh said that the BJP-led government will gradually improve the transport sector in the next six months.

“In the first phase, we will focus on immediate and necessary reforms. In the second phase, we will present major projects to make public transport more efficient and accessible,” he said. As part of the government’s approach to modern and environmentally friendly dynamics, Singh underlined the importance of increasing the number of electric buses in Delhi. Meanwhile, Delhi’s 2020 electric vehicle (EV) policy, which ended in August last year, has been extended several times. The latest expansion is till 31 March 2025. On November 28, 2024, former Chief Minister Atishi announced at a press conference that in response to the deteriorating air quality, the Delhi Cabinet has decided to expand the EV policy and restore the pending subsidy and road tax exemption from 1 January.
