Punjab Kings, who have been longing for the title for the last 17 years, have done well in IPL 2025. The Punjab team has made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Punjab stood in the top position in the league stage. Ricky Ponting believes that the team’s strategy in the auction and the performance of unkapped players helped to flourish their plan to play differently in this session.
Ponting has won the title with a player and head coach Mumbai Indians. While he was also the coach of Delhi Capitals in seven seasons. In a conversation with PTI before the IPL playoffs, Ponting said that with joining the team, he had ensured that things would be different this time. He said that, we had started with auction, when only two unaccounted players were retained for which he had to bear a lot of criticism. People felt that we made a mistake but I was very clear where I wanted to take the team and we should choose the right player for that.
Ponting further said that, the season has been good so far and in the last match against Mumbai, 6 unaccounted players were in the team, who performed well. We talked among ourselves that we have to live in the top two and we topped the league. Looks great.
He said that the performance of Indian core players and especially captain Shreyas Iyer has been excellent. He said that, we get all the players we want. Be it young players or experienced foreign players. We did not lose the rhythm even after Glenn Maxwell and Lockie Ferguson were out early. Indian core players have performed excellent and as captain Shreyas Iyer performed a lot.
