Pakistan’s Economic Survey has shown that Pakistan’s debt is at the highest level ever. This has made Pakistan’s financial situation worrying. The document with all the details and figures in the Pakistani rupee states that Pakistan’s total public debt (ending March 2025) has reached 76,007 billion Pakistani rupees (76 trillions), which is the highest in the history of the country so far. This means that the loan in Indian rupee is 23.1 trillion rupees and US $ 269.344. This public debt of Pakistan has almost doubled in the last four years, as it was Rs 39,860 billion in 2020-21. Ten years ago, Pakistan’s public debt was Rs 17,380 billion rupees. Thus, public debt in Pakistan has increased by about five times in a decade.

This figure of Rs 76,007 billion includes domestic loan of Rs 51,518 billion and external loan of Rs 24,489 billion. Pakistan’s Economic Survey states that “very or poorly managed loans can cause serious weaknesses, such as increased interest burden and if it is ignored, it can weaken long -term fiscal stability and economic security. Pakistan has assisted US $ 1.03 billion under IMF’s extended fund facility. Economic Survey states that there was an increase in public loans during the first nine months of Finance 2025.

Pakistan has been infamous to seek relief packages from international organizations as well as ‘Allied countries’. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif even said that when we go to a friend country today or call, he feels that we have come to ask for money from them. Sharif had also said earlier that small economies have also surpassed Pakistan and we have been wandering with a bowl of begging for the last 75 years. According to the World Bank, India has taken out a record number of people out of poverty, but according to the latest estimates of Pakistan on Pakistan, about 45 percent of its population lives in poverty, while 16.5 percent people live in extreme poverty.
