Colombo. Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Commission has written to President Anuar Kumar Dissanayaka, alleging that its members have not been allowed to meet Rohingya refugees living in a military camp since last week. The letter said, “On 26 December, a team of officials, including a Director of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), attempted to monitor the detention conditions of these people at the Sri Lankan Air Force camp in Mullaitivu, Northern Province . But they were stopped from reaching these people.”
The Sri Lankan Navy on December 20 said it had rescued more than 100 Myanmar Rohingya stranded in distress in the sea off the northeastern coast. According to the Navy, they were sighted by local fishermen in Vellamulivaikkal area of Mullaitivu district. The government later said that the reason for their arrival may have been human trafficking.
“Investigations have shown that they came here deliberately and we consider them illegal immigrants,” The Sunday Times quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemchandra as saying. The HRCSL letter states that the powers and functions of the Commission extend not only to Sri Lankan citizens but also to any person detained in Sri Lanka. The HRCSL has asked the Controller General of Immigration and other responsible officials accused of obstructing the commission’s efforts to monitor detention conditions to appear on December 31 to explain.
