The Indian Meteorological Department warned on Monday that the weather of April to June would be warmer than normal and there is a possibility of more heat stroke in many states including central and eastern India and northwest plains. India Meteorological Department (IMD) chief Mrityunjay Mahapatra said in an online press conference that the minimum temperature in most areas will also be higher than normal. He said, “North and eastern India, central India and most parts of the north-west India from April to June are likely to blow two to four days more hot winds than usual.”

According to the information, heatwaves are recorded in India from April to June for four to seven days. An IMD official had earlier stated that the number of summer days in northwest India may double, while the number of summer days is five to six. The IMD has predicted that states where more heat may occur than normal include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the northern parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The IMD said that most parts of India are expected to exceed the maximum temperature in April, but some areas of far southern and northwest areas may have normal temperatures. Mahapatra said that except for some places in the north-west and north-east, where the temperature may be normal or slightly lower than normal, the minimum temperature in the whole of India will be higher than normal. Citing excessive summer days, experts have warned that India should be ready to increase the demand for electricity in this summer season by 9 to 10 percent.
