supreme court commutes death sentence of man who killed wife and four children in 2008

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court changed the death sentence of a person to life imprisonment during death. In 2008, he was convicted for brutal murder of his wife and four children and killing his 12 -year -old daughter.

A bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Sandeep Mehta upheld the conviction of Reji Kumar alias Regi, but turned his death sentence into imprisonment until the last breath due to his good conduct in 16–17 years of imprisonment.

The bench said in its judgment, “Ramesh e Nayak vs. Registrar General, keeping in mind the discussion held in the Karnataka High Court (2025) and considering the fact that the guilty-appeller had no previous history of the crime; His good conduct during imprisonment of last 16–17 years; Considering the difficulties in mental health and constant efforts to become an ideal prisoner, we find that it would be unfair to give death penalty. ‘

The bench said, “Therefore, he is not being given death penalty.” However, seeing the severity of crime, the number of people killed, four of the five had their own children, we believe that he should not be released and we instruct him to spend in jail till his last breath so that he can atone for his crimes committed. ”

The bench partially accepted the appeal and revised the death sentence sentenced to the convict by the Kerala High Court and the Subordinate Court and turned it into imprisonment until his death.

The apex court also kept in mind the report of the probation officer, in addition to the report of the psychological evaluation of the convict. It found that Razi’s conduct in the jail was immaculate – the jail authorities had confidence in him and he was repeatedly given positions that require discipline, responsibility and credibility.

Regi was appointed by cable network operator Abubakar Siddiqui as an agricultural laborer in his rubber plantation in Amayur, Palakkad. He was living in a rented house in Amayur with his wife Lisy and two of his young children. Her two daughters were studying in a private school in Rampuram, Pala and living in a hostel.

Regi had a physical relationship with a woman, from which she met while working in the plantation. The case of the prosecution was that Rei strangled Lisi to death on July 8, 2008, while he killed two children on 13 July.

He then brought his two daughters home on the pretext of his mother’s death and raped the eldest daughter and then strangled her to death on 23 July. He also killed another daughter on the same day. The bodies of both the girls were found indoors on the same day, while Lisy’s body was found in the septic tank on 25 July. The bodies of two other children were found buried in an adjacent property.
