Cities are ranked based on the implementation of approved activities under the City Action Plan and air quality in cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

Surat topped the ranking of Indian cities based on improvement in air quality, while Jabalpur and Agra were ranked second. The Union Environment Ministry presented the ‘National Clean Air City’ awards during the Clean Air Survey-2024 at a national workshop held in Jaipur on Saturday on the occasion of ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies’.

Surat, Jabalpur and Agra secured the top three positions among cities with a population of more than 1 million. Firozabad (UP), Amravati (Maharashtra) and Jhansi (UP) were ranked best among cities with a population between 3 lakh and 1 million. Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh), Nalgonda (Telangana) and Nalagarh (Himachal Pradesh) were ranked top among cities with a population of less than 3 lakh.

The Ministry has launched the ‘Clean Air Survey’ initiative, under which cities are ranked based on the implementation of activities approved under the City Action Plan and air quality in cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). These cities have been awarded for remarkable improvement in air quality through various best practices to reduce air pollution.
