Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that the government was working on a constitutional amendment to extend the tenure of three top officials to cover up investigations into the rigging of the February general elections.
Khan is seeking a Supreme Court probe into allegations of election rigging to deprive the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of victory and a conspiracy to implicate his party in the May 9, 2023 violence.
Addressing reporters in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, Khan claimed that despite its defeat in the previous elections, the government was now resorting to these amendments to defend itself and its officials in power by accusing them of manipulating the election results, the Express Tribune newspaper reported.
“They (the government) are amending the Constitution to extend the tenure of their three pawns,” Khan said, adding that he meant Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Amir Farooq and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raza.
Khan warned that if Chief Justice Isa is removed, an investigation will be launched into the May 9 protests and alleged rigging of the elections. Khan accused the government of trying to finish off his party. He said that if a new Chief Justice takes office, the reality of the May 9 incident will come out.
