A Bandra magistrate court on Sunday granted bail to all 12 people arrested in connection with the sabotage in The Habitat Studios including Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader Rahul Kanal. The incident was related to a dispute over a show by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra. The accused was granted bail on a private bond of ₹ 15,000- 15,000, a day after being arrested by the Khar police and sent to judicial custody. The group allegedly vandalized when the group alleged that Kamra had made derogatory remarks against Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a show recorded on January 21.
The police had registered a case under several sections on the accused, including BNS 132 and BNS 333 – both are non -bailable offenses. Kanal’s lawyer opposed the allegations in the court and described the sections imposed as illegal. The defense also stated that the first FIR in the case was lodged at MIDC Police Station. Police told the court that the group entered the venue and damaged, while claiming that Kamra had insulted Shinde. The accused were produced in court on Saturday and the next day they were granted bail.
There was a lot of uproar in both houses of the Maharashtra Legislature on Monday and the proceedings had to be postponed several times due to the sarcasm on Shiv Sena leader and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on behalf of Kunal Kamra. In the assembly, Shiv Sena members demanded strict action against Kamra, a ‘stand-up comedian’, who described Shinde as ‘traitors’. Arjun Khotkar of Shiv Sena raised this issue in the House and Minister Shamburaj Desai supported him.
