‘There is no punishment to those who return weapons within 7 days’, the ultimatum of the Governor of Manipur amid unrest

Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla on Thursday asked people from all communities to hand over the weapons looted and kept illegally kept within seven days and assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who follow the ultimatum.The Governor said in an official statement, “In the broader interest of restoring the general situation, so that people can return to their normal day-to-day activities, to eliminate enmity to all communities of the state and maintain peace and order in the society. Should come forward. “

Bhalla also said that for more than 20 months, the people of Manipur – both the valley and the hills – have been facing a lot of difficulties due to many tragic incidents that disrupt communal harmony.
The statement said, “In this regard, I honestly request people of all communities, especially the valley and hills, to come forward voluntarily and looted and illegally kept weapons and ammunition today. Within the next seven days, submit to the nearest police station, outposts, security forces camp. That if such weapons are returned within the stipulated time, no punitive action will be initiated.

President’s rule was imposed in Manipur last week and the state assembly was suspended a few days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post. Nearly two years after the ethnic violence started in the northeastern state, Biren Singh resigned as the Chief Minister. Violence in Manipur began in May 2023 and cruel clashes between the majority of Metei community in the Imphal Valley and in the surrounding hills, which led to more than 250 people and thousands of people were displaced.
