Security has been increased in the entire district and further progress is expected as the investigation proceeds. It should be noted that PM Shahbaz announced last month that the federal government after consulting with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has decided not to construct any new canal until the pending water dispute is resolved through the Council of Common Interests (CCI). No unilateral decision will be taken on canal projects without consent.
In February 2025, the Pakistan government announced a plan to construct 6 new canals on the Indus river system. Under this scheme, canals are to be constructed in Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh. But critics say that through the dam, the Government of Pakistan wants to transfer Sindh water to Punjab province, which aims to carry water into 1.9 million hectares of barren land in Punjab. Residents of Sindh believe that this project violates their water rights and may be disastrous for the already facing water crisis.
