Just before the adjournment, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi had begun speaking on the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President's address in the joint sitting of Parliament. When the House resumed, there were almost similar scenes and Trivedi's speech was again interrupted. At one point, Mallikarjun Kharge also came into the Well and joined the Opposition protest.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday (June 28) expressed displeasure over Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge coming into the Well of the House during the opposition protest, saying that this is the first time in history that a person holding this position is involved in such conduct. The proceedings of the Upper House of Parliament had to be adjourned thrice on Friday due to the opposition's protest and sloganeering. Soon after the papers listed in the morning session were tabled in the House, the Chairman informed that he had not accepted 22 notices of opposition leaders to suspend the day's scheduled business and discuss the issue of alleged NEET irregularities. Which was demanded by many leaders.
Following the announcement, opposition MPs started protesting and raising slogans while many of them entered the Well of the House. This forced the adjournment of the proceedings. The Rajya Sabha Chairman remarked that the act of an Opposition leader entering the Well was a first in history and it has become a “stain” for Parliament.
“I am saddened and surprised that Indian parliamentary tradition would stoop so low that the Leader of the Opposition would come into the Well,” he said before adjourning the proceedings till 2 pm. Later, he again referred to the incident. He said that the kind of conduct, vile conduct, conduct that will hurt every Indian, will bring shame to this institution. We are elected here and feel the pride of being members of the Upper House, the House of Elders. If we behave indecently in this House, it is extremely unfortunate. Later, the House began discussion on the motion of thanks before adjourning for the day at around 6 pm. The Rajya Sabha will meet again at 11 am on Monday.
