Thrissur (Kerala): Union Minister Suresh Gopi has expressed his desire to install a life-size statue of former king Shakthan Thampuran to honour him as the founder of Thrissur city. He said he was waiting for the approval of civic officials for the same. The famous statue of Thampuran located in Shakthi Nagar in the city collapsed after a KSRTC bus hit it in June this year. Gopi said there was no provision in the MPLAD fund to spend money for the construction of the statue but he was ready to bear the cost to pay respect to Thrissur.

Gopi, who turned actor-turned-politician, won the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat in this year’s general election. The minister told reporters here that he had called up city mayor M K Varghese soon after the statue collapsed and conveyed his wish to have a new statue constructed. “I have said that I am ready to have a life-size bronze statue of Sakthan Thampuran erected… let them (the corporation) convey their decision,” Gopi said. He said it would take at least six months to make the life-size bronze statue. Cochin Maharaja Sakthan Thampuran (1790-1805) had initiated the state’s prestigious temple festival “Thrissur Pooram” with an aim to unite the people of the state.
