The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has intensified its demand to make Marathi mandatory in all nationalized banks, and has started a new demonstration to pressurize the authorities to transact and interaction in the official language of the state. As part of their protests, MNS workers visited Yes Bank, where they symbolically gave flowers and stones to the bank officials, reminiscent of their demand and warning. The party has announced that similar demonstrations will be held in all banks from today. This aggressive stance came after MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s recent speech at the Gudi Padwa rally, where he reiterated his party’s stand on making Marathi mandatory for official objectives.

Earlier, a security guard working in Mumbai was beaten up by MNS workers for allegedly not being able to speak Marathi. A video of the incident went viral in which MNS workers were seen scolding the security guard in Powai, Mumbai. A worker is seen slapping the person due to not being able to talk in Marathi. This is not the first time MNS has taken an aggressive stance on the issue of Marathi language. When Raj Thackeray separated from the Shiv Sena in 2006 and formed a party, one of his major agenda was to advocate the rights of Marathi Manus (Marathi). Initial campaigns included forcing businesses to showcase their names in Marathi, which led to violent protests and legal cases against party workers.

In 2007-08, MNS workers attacked candidates from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who came to Mumbai for railway recruitment examination. He argued that local youth should be given priority in jobs in Maharashtra. This incident caused resentment across the country and the leaders of all parties condemned the antics of MNS. MNS has also intervened in the entertainment sector and has pressurized multiplexes to allocate screens for Marathi films. The party warned that if Marathi cinema was sidelined, it would have to bear the consequences, after which the theater owners followed it.
