Kambli looks very ill in this video and he was so happy to see Sachin Tendulkar that he was not able to even leave his hand. But meanwhile, former captain Rahul Dravid had commented honestly. He had told what is the difference between Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar, who hit the great Anil Kumble for a six on the very first ball.
Sachin Tendulkar’s childhood friend Kambli was one of the most talked-about cricketers when he entered the cricket field, but he failed to maintain his stature. Despite playing 104 ODIs and 17 Tests for India after making his debut in 1991, Kambli’s international career did not last even a decade. Regarding this, Rahul Dravid, who played 509 matches for India and later coached the senior team, once gave an example of how Vinod Kambli had incredible ball-hitting ability, but perhaps this is what it takes to become an international cricketer. He didn’t have the talent in other areas to understand.
Rahul Dravid says in the video that, I think we misjudge talent. How do we see talent? I have also made the same mistake. We judge talent by people’s ability to hit the cricket ball. Sweetness or timing of the cricket ball. This is the only way we see talent. Things like determination, courage, discipline and temperament are also talents. When we evaluate talent I think we have to look at the whole package.
Dravid said that it is difficult to understand, but some people have the skill of timing and ball-striking. Sauv Ganguly had the ability to time the cover drive. Sachin has this ability, and Viru too. You wouldn’t say that about a player like Gautam Gambhir any more than you would say about some of these other players. It is not that Gautam is less successful. That’s why we see talent in this way. We don’t really see the other side of talent. We say that a talented player did not succeed. We always see this aspect but perhaps he did not have other talents.
Rahul further said that, I feel bad but Vinod is probably one of the nicest people I have met. Vinod had amazing ability to hit the ball. I remember a game in Rajkot. Vinod had scored 150 runs against Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble. This was unbelievable. Anil bowled the first ball, he hit it straight to the stone wall. There used to be a stone wall in Rajkot. He hit straight at him. I mean we were all shocked, wow that was amazing. How do you do that? But perhaps he didn’t have the talent in other areas to understand how to deal with the stress and pressure of what it takes to become an international cricketer. I can only guess but perhaps Sachin had more to offer than that. This is the reason why Sachin is where he is today.
