Another devotee said that we do not have water to complete Chhath Puja. The sun is setting and our time to offer Arghya is running out. They could have told us earlier, we could have done this by filling water in tubs on the rooftops.

Chhath Puja celebrations turned sour in Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Thursday after devotees protested against the dry ghat built by the state government. This was a big shock for hundreds of devotees who had reached the artificial ghat to offer ‘Sandhya Arghya’ to worship the setting sun. After this their protest started. A devotee said, “If they were not to provide water, then why did they (government officials) make all these arrangements? We could have celebrated the festival at our homes. If water was not provided, we would have taken to the streets.

Another devotee said that we do not have water to complete Chhath Puja. The sun is setting and our time to offer Arghya is running out. They could have told us earlier, we could have done this by filling water in tubs on the rooftops. We are being insulted and the MLA has switched off his phone. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has made arrangements for devotees to perform puja at 1,000 different places in the city. The government did not allow Chhath Puja to be performed at Yamuna ghats due to pollution in the river.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court had refused to allow devotees to perform Chhath Puja on the banks of river Yamuna here, noting that it is highly polluted and could cause people to fall ill. The High Court said that the Delhi government has made adequate arrangements for devotees to worship at 1,000 different places in the city and nothing more can be done at the last minute.
