The Indus Water Treaty signed in 1960 controls the water sharing between India and Pakistan through the Indus river system. However, India “postponed” the treaty on 22 April after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 civilians. The government linked the suspension of the treaty with the continuous support of Islamabad to cross -border terrorism. Pakistan has denied joining the Pahalgam attack. The treaty is suspended, despite the ceasefire agreement between the two nuclear -rich neighbors after the worst clashes on the border in decades.
Since April, Islamabad has repeatedly urged India to reconsider its decision. According to officials familiar with the case, Pakistan’s Water Resources Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza has written at least four letters to the Ministry of Water Power of India – three of them are written after the conclusion of the military operation Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam murder case – which has been asked to review the suspension.
