During the Emergency in the mid -1970s, the state broadcast Doordarshan was the only television channel. This channel owned and operating the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was the only source of entertainment and news for thousands of people. In 1975, Doordarshan broadcast had access to only seven cities in India. Doordarshan was used to promote government messages during the Emergency.
The Congress was crushed in 1975 to remind them of the black days of the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi -led government and how the freedom of expression was crushed. He refused to support the Emergency and showed great courage. As a result, Doordarshan banned all his films.
Majrooh Sultanpuri was arrested in 1951 for reading an anti -Nehru poetry in a labor movement in Mumbai and had to spend a year in Arthur Road Jail after refusing to apologize. Balraj Sahni was jailed for six months on charges of inciting violence during the Communist Party procession. Modi said, the ban on Dev Anand’s films during the Emergency was one of the several steps taken by Indira Gandhi -led government to curb independence. During this time, the broadcast of some films was banned, Kishore Kumar’s songs faced government sensorship. Actor Dilip Kumar was also on target. Dev Anand has revealed the tussle and estrangement with the government in his autobiography romance with life.
