Around 10 soldiers, including the driver, were seriously injured when a vehicle went off the road near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on Tuesday evening. White Knight Corps said that 5 soldiers lost their lives when an army vehicle met with an accident in Poonch sector. Rescue operations are underway and injured personnel are receiving medical care. Police said that at around 17:40 hours (5.40 pm) today, an army vehicle of 11 Maratha Light Infantry, which was moving from Neelam Headquarters on the LoC towards Balnoi Ghoda Post, met with an accident near Ghoda Post. He said that the vehicle fell into a ditch about 150 feet deep, due to which 10 soldiers including the driver were seriously injured.
A quick reaction team (QRT) of 11 Maratha Light Infantry and a police party from Mankot reached the spot and started rescue operations. Given the region’s rugged and mountainous terrain, traffic accidents are not uncommon in Jammu and Kashmir, in which cars and other vehicles fall into valleys. On December 15, two Army soldiers were injured when their vehicle skidded on the Jadikushi-Gurez road in Gurez. In September, a soldier was also killed and six others were injured when a vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a ditch on Sukrala Mata Ashram Road.
