The Election Commission of India on Monday declared the results of the by -elections held on June 19 in five assembly seats in four states. Among them, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won two seats, while Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) won one seat each. You emerged with the biggest edge, which won in Ludhiana West in Punjab and Visavadar in Gujarat. The Congress captured the Nilambur seat in Kerala, the BJP retained its stronghold in Kadi, Gujarat, while the Trinamool Congress won Kaliganj in West Bengal easily.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday appreciated the party’s performance in the Gujarat and Punjab by -elections and described it as a “semi -finals of 2027”, saying that there is a clear indication that the voters would reject both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora from Punjab’s Ludhiana West Assembly seat defeated his close rival and Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu by a margin of 10,637 votes.
The counting of by -elections for two assembly seats in Gujarat was held on Monday. Officials said that ‘AAP’ leader Gopal Italia won the Visavadar seat, while BJP’s Rajendra Chavda won the tough seat. At a press conference after the results, Kejriwal said, “We have won by almost double the margin from the margin of 2022.
Assembly elections are to be held in both Gujarat and Punjab states in 2027. According to data shared by the Election Commission, former Gujarat president Italia defeated his nearest rival BJP candidate Kirit Patel in Visavadar seat in Junagadh district by a margin of 17,554 votes. After the 21 round of counting, Italia got 75,942 votes, while Patel got 58,388 votes. Kejriwal said that the people of Punjab have given huge support to the AAP government. He said, “By winning us by a huge margin, the people of Punjab have approved AAP’s work in the state.”
He also emphasized the importance of AAP’s victory in Gujarat, which has traditionally been the BJP’s stronghold. Kejriwal said, “It is often said that the ruling party wins in the by -elections. But our victory in Gujarat shows that people are fed up with the 30 -year BJP rule. They are now seeing you as a reliable option.” Criticizing the Congress, Kejriwal alleged that the party was working closely with the BJP.
He said, “These by -elections show how the Congress leadership helped the BJP to defeat you. The Congress has become a puppet of the BJP. I request Congress workers to understand this and join you.”
Pointing to AAP’s political progress in Gujarat, Kejriwal said, “We won Visavadar in February 2022 but later joined the BJP. Today we have won by Visavadar and Ludhiana by almost double the margin in the West. This is a big sign that people are happy with our work.”
Kejriwal congratulated Gopal Italia and Sanjeev Arora and said that the victory of these two indicates that the contest in Gujarat is now directly between AAP and BJP, as the Congress has “sweet relations with the ruling party”. Celebrations were held at AAP headquarters in Delhi, where party workers distributed laddus and raised slogans. He described the results as a glimpse of the expected political change before the 2027 elections.
