Mumbai . The body of a seven-year-old boy, who went missing following a collision between a boat and a naval ship off the Mumbai coast, was recovered on Saturday morning after a three-day search operation. An officer gave this information. However, the search operation will continue until the boat is righted and it is confirmed that there are no more bodies, a Navy official said. Naval boats recovered the body of Johan Mohammad Nisar Ahmed Pathan, taking the death toll in the accident on December 18 to 15.
It is one of the deadliest accidents to have occurred in the port area of the city and the Navy has started an investigation. A naval helicopter and boats of the Navy and Coast Guard were deployed to search for the missing passengers, the official said. Of the 113 people on board the ship and boat, 15 died and 98, including two injured, were rescued. There were six people on board the naval vessel, out of which two survived, the official said. The naval ship had rammed the passenger ferry ‘Neel Kamal’ during an engine test near the Mumbai coast on Wednesday afternoon.
The ferry was carrying more than 100 passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The police officer said that according to the documents issued by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the ferry was allowed to carry 84 passengers and six crew members, but it was overcrowded. The MMB, which is conducting its own investigation, canceled the license of the ferry as it was carrying more than the permissible limit and thus was in violation of the Inland Vessels Act. A case has been registered against the driver of the naval ship at Colaba police station under relevant sections of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS). Officials said the ship affected by the accident is in the custody of the Navy and the police will requisition it as and when required for investigation.
