British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has admitted in court for the first time that its Covid-19 vaccine can cause serious side effects. In India we know this vaccine as Covishield. AstraZeneca had developed this vaccine in collaboration with the University of Oxford. AstraZeneca is facing legal action due to deaths, blood clotting and other serious problems after taking the vaccine. Many families alleged that the vaccine had caused serious side effects.

British newspaper The Telegraph has prepared a report quoting court documents. According to this, the first case against AstraZeneca was filed by a person named Jamie Scott. He suffered permanent brain injury after taking the AstraZeneca vaccine in April 2021. He could not work after taking the vaccine. Jamie's condition was such that during that time the hospital called his wife three times and told her that her husband was going to die.

Jamie suffered a serious side effect called TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome). Due to this, blood clots are formed in the brain of people and the number of platelets decreases.

According to the report, AstraZeneca submitted documents in the court in February this year itself. In this, it was told that its Covid vaccine can cause TTS in some cases. There are 51 cases registered against the company in the UK High Court. The victim's family is demanding compensation of about Rs 1000 crore (100 million pounds) from the company.

Earlier, in May 2023, AstraZeneca had said that it does not accept the possibility of TTS being caused by the vaccine in general. However, now the company is saying that this can happen in some rare cases. And he doesn't know why this happened. The company also says that TTS can occur even without the vaccine.

The lawyer for the victims' families claimed in court that the AstraZeneca vaccine is “bad” and its effectiveness has been “greatly exaggerated”. However, AstraZeneca rejected it outright.

Even when AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine started being administered, there was a lot of controversy regarding its side effects. However, the company had then said that no serious side effects of the vaccine were seen during the trial. It was said that after vaccination, symptoms like fatigue, sore throat and mild fever were seen. But no case of death or serious illness was reported.

In India, this vaccine was manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII). SII had signed an agreement with AstraZeneca even before the vaccine came into the market. Serum Institute is the world's largest vaccine manufacturing company. In India, about 80 percent of the vaccine doses administered are of Covishield only.

In January this year, The Telegraph had published another report. This report shows that people who suffered serious side effects due to the AstraZeneca vaccine complained that they faced censorship when they talked about their symptoms on social media.
