Court granted interim bail to UP MLA Abbas Ansari in Gangster Act case

The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari in a case registered under the State Gangster Act. A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice N Kotishwar Singh directed Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari to stay in his government residence in Lucknow and said that he would have to seek permission from the authorities before visiting his constituency in Mau.

The bench asked Ansari not to leave Uttar Pradesh without the prior permission of the court and inform the police officers a day before appearing in the courts. The apex court asked the police to report a status in six weeks on compliance of bail conditions related to Ansari.

Ansari was detained on 4 November 2022 in another criminal case, but was arrested on 6 September 2024 under the Gangster Act. The bench said that he has been granted bail in all criminal cases except the Gangster Act case.

On December 18 last year, the Allahabad High Court rejected Ansari’s bail plea in the case. An FIR was lodged against the UP gangster and anti -social activities (prevention) Act, 3 of the Act, 1986 against Ansari, Navneet Sachan, Niaz Ansari, Faraj Khan and Shahbaz Alam Khan on 31 August 2024 at Kotwali Karvi police station in Chitrakoot district under Section 2, 3 of 1986. He was accused of extortion and assault. Suheldev is a MLA of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party from Ansari Mau constituency.
