Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Saturday alerted people about the possible water crisis. According to the Water Board, the level of ammonia in Yamuna river has increased. Due to this, water production at Wazirabad water treatment plant has been affected.
Due to impact of water production, people will not get adequate water in many areas including Defense Colony, Greater Kailash, ITO, Rajghat, Lok Nayak Hospital, areas under New Delhi Municipal Council, parts of Cantonment area and South Delhi. Water supply has been affected here.
According to the bulletin issued by Delhi Jal Board, due to ammonia level being more than 5 parts per million, the water production in the major water treatment plant will be reduced by 25 to 50 percent. It said water will be supplied at low pressure to affected areas until improvements are made.
According to a DJB official, DJB’s water treatment plants can handle ammonia up to 1 part per million, and more than that exceeds the capacity of the chlorination plant. The Wazirabad plant, which has a capacity of 131 million gallons per day (MGD), gets water from the Carrier Lined Channel or Munak Canal and the flow of Yamuna River. Raw water from the river channel carries industrial waste (such as fertilisers, dyes and plastics) and dissolved organic matter, which are sources of ammonia – this problem is particularly exacerbated by high concentrations of pollutants in the winter season, as the river Due to lack of rain in the upper stream the river shrinks.
