Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the process of identifying the “foreigners”, which has slowed down due to matters related to the National Citizen Register, will now continue at a fast pace.

A low -talked law called the 1950 immigrant expulsion order will be followed to send back illegal immigrants in Assam. This step is about to open Bhanumati’s box, as it is against the traditional process. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the process of identifying the “foreigners”, which has slowed down due to matters related to the National Citizen Register, will now continue at a fast pace. He said that this time, if someone is identified as a foreigner, we will not have to raise the matter before the Foreign Tribunal to send the person back.

He said that during earlier hearing on Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, the Supreme Court had mentioned that it is not binding to contact the judiciary to always send the foreigners back. He said, “There is an old law – immigrant removal order. The Supreme Court said that this law is still in force. According to this law, the DC (District Commissioner) has the right to issue and send the order and send it back.”

He further said, “For any reason our lawyers did not inform us about this order and we were not aware of it. It came to our attention recently. Now we will discuss it seriously. Meanwhile, the process of pushbacks will continue.” He said that the government has already sent many people back. However, people whose cases are pending in court have not been sent back. Foreigners’ tribunals are semi-judicial bodies that deal with the cases of suspected foreigners.
