The first phase of voting has been completed in Jammu and Kashmir. The second phase of voting will be held on September 25. Addressing a public meeting in Rajouri, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said that Mufti Sahab (Mufti Mohammad Sayeed) tried very hard, established Congress in 50 years (in Jammu and Kashmir). When Congress was established here, Farooq Sahab joined hands with Rajiv Gandhi and put Congress in his pocket. He has just given death sentence to a person, whose name I will not take. He rigged the 1987 elections and created such a situation that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are still digging graves for the youth.

Assembly elections are going to be held there for the first time since the repeal of Article 370 in August 2019 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh). After delimitation in the year 2022, the number of assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir increased from 87 to 90, out of which 47 seats are in Kashmir Valley and 43 seats are in Jammu. Regarding the large number of independent candidates in the electoral fray, the National Conference (NC), Congress and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that they are getting support from Delhi.

A total of 365 candidates have filed nominations as independents for the three-phase assembly elections. This is the second largest number of independent candidates contesting elections in Jammu and Kashmir. In the 2008 assembly elections held soon after the Amarnath land dispute movement, 468 candidates tried their luck as independents. Dozens of people were killed and hundreds were injured in this movement. The total number of candidates in the 2024 assembly elections is also the second largest ever.
