Birth and education
Mehbooba Mufti was born on 22 May 1959 in Anantnag district of Kashmir. His father’s name was Mohammad Mufti Syed and mother’s name was Gulshan Nazir. She belongs to a well-known political family. His father was the Union Home Minister of the country during that time when an aircraft was hijacked by terrorists in 1989. In lieu of this aircraft hijack, the terrorists demanded the release of the famous terrorist. The aircraft passengers also included Mehbooba Mufti’s sister Rubia. Mehbooba Mufti has completed LLB’s studies from Kashmir University.
Political journey
After father Mohammad Mufti Syed, Mehbooba Mufti carried forward his father’s political legacy. He started his political career with the Congress party. In 1996, he contested from Bijbehar assembly seat on a Congress ticket and won. In the year 1999, Mehbooba Mufti contested the MP from Srinagar. But during this time he had to face defeat to Umar Abdullah.
After marrying the Congress party, he formed the PDP party. During the Rajya Sabha election in 2002, Mehbooba Mufti won the election from Pahalgam. During the Lok Sabha elections from Anantnag seat, Mehbooba Mufti won in 2004 and 2014. After this, in 2016, Mehbooba was elected as Chief Minister in the alliance of PDP with the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, in the year 2018, PDP and BJP alliance broke and their government fell in the state.
