Russia agreed to set up joint ventures in India for defense sector

Russia on Tuesday agreed to set up joint production units in India to address New Delhi's concerns over delays in supply of spare parts for Russian military equipment.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of delay in supply of spare parts with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit. The two leaders discussed various aspects of India-Russia defence relations at the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit here.

Addressing a press conference after the talks between Modi and Putin, Kwatra said, “There was a consensus on both sides that this would be accelerated, including by setting up joint ventures in India, to meaningfully address the challenge of delays in supply of essential components.”

There have been inordinate delays in the supply of spare parts for various Russian military equipment to the Indian armed forces, raising concerns in New Delhi. Kwatra said Modi and Putin held extensive discussions on co-production of military equipment. Russia has been a major supplier of military equipment and spare parts to India for the past seven decades.
