The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday 27 March opposing the Central Government’s Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024. While presenting the proposal, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that this bill will affect Muslims badly. Stalin said that the Central Government is trying to amend the Waqf Bill, which will obstruct the powers of the Waqf Board. This is hurting the sentiments of Muslims and the central government does not care about it.

According to the news agency ANI, the proposal states that people in India are living with religious goodwill and the Constitution has given all the people the right to follow their religion. It states, “The elected governments have the right to protect it. The Assembly unanimously emphasizes that the Central Government should withdraw the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 for the Waqf Act 1995, which will badly affect minority Muslims.”

Opposing the proposal, BJP MLA Vanthi Srinivasan said, “Any elected government has the right to bring any amendment. The central government has the right to bring amendments. We opposed the proposal and walked out of the assembly.” Meanwhile, AIADMK national spokesperson Kovai Satyan said, “It seems that DMK is in a hurry to set a nervous set on the basis of religion, language. He said that the parties whose members are in JPC, why are they not challenging Waqf in the judiciary?
