The selection committee of PM Modi, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi will meet for the selection of the next CEC today

The selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting in New Delhi on Monday to finalize the name of the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The committee also includes Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting will be held at the official residence of the Prime Minister before the current Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar retires on February 18.

The panel will recommend one of the candidates selected by the search committee. After this, the President will appoint the next CEC on the basis of recommendation. Dnyanesh Kumar is ahead in the race. Dnyanesh Kumar is the most senior election commissioner after Rajiv Kumar. His term is till 26 January 2029. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu is the second Election Commissioner. The most senior Election Commissioner (EC) till now was promoted to the post of CEC after the current Chief Election Commissioner retired.

However, after a new law was implemented on the appointments of CEC and EC last year, a search committee shortlisted the names of five secretary level officers for consideration by the Prime Minister -led panel for appointment to the posts. Apart from CEC, a new EC can also be appointed to fill Rajiv Kumar’s retirement vacancy. Sources said that the same candidates can also be used for the appointment of the new Election Commissioner.
