A heavy avalanche occurred on Friday near Mana in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, in which at least 57 laborers working with the Border Roads Organization (BRO) were trapped. The incident took place in a height area near the Indo-China border, where BRO personnel were engaged in road construction work. At present, 32 laborers have been rescued. The Uttarakhand Disaster Management Department said that by 5:00 pm, 32 people had been safely rescued. The process of evacuating the remaining 25 people is going on. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to DG ITBP and DG NDRF including Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami regarding the avalanche in Chamoli district. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed deep concern over the avalanche. CM Dhami confirmed that Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), BRO and other rescue teams have been deployed to conduct relief and rescue operations in the affected area. Due to bad weather and frequent snowfall, there are difficulties in running rescue and relief work on the spot. However, no casualties were reported in the incident yet.
Mana India, about three kilometers from Badrinath, is the last village on the Tibet border which is located at a height of 3200 meters. The accident site has been considered dangerous in winter in terms of avalanche, so in the past, people were removed from this camp and kept in Badrinath. Mana village head Pitambar Singh told PTI that this time the camp was not closed due to lack of snow and today the workers were hit by the accident. Badrinathdham, Nara and Narayan are situated on the foothills of mountains, in the middle of which the Alaknanda river flows.
