Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said on Friday that more than one crore Hindus will participate in around 2,000 Ram Navami rallies in West Bengal on April 6. Speaking at an event in his constituency Nandigram in East Medinipur district, the officer called upon the Ram Navami organizers not to seek permission from the administration to remove rallies as we do not need permission to pray for Lord Rama. He said that last year, around 50,000 Hindus took part in around 1,000 Ram Navami rallies. This year, on 6 April, 2,000 rallies will be taken out on at least 1 crore Hindu roads in the entire state.

Without naming any community, he said that no permission should be taken from the administration to take out a rally. We do not need permission to worship Lord Rama. We will be peaceful. But it is the administration’s job to ensure that other people also be peaceful. The official announced that by the end of this year, the Ram temple will be constructed at his constituency Sonchura. The ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition CPI (M), while targeting the officer, accused him of indulging in the politics of “partition and religion”.

West Bengal minister and senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim said, “The people of the state will not be affected by any rhetoric of BJP leaders like officers. Everyone has the right to perform religious rituals and celebrate festivals as per their wish.” He said that on the land of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Sri Chaitanya and Rabindranath Tagore, people cannot be influenced by staunch nationalist statements. Those who want to remove rallies on Ram Navami will do so. They do not need to say the officer.
