After a long wait, the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit president is expected to be announced. The process of appointment of the new chairman started in October last year and according to all accounts, it was expected to be finalized by January. However, due to various pressures and political views, one after another was postponed. On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Lucknow and then last week by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his residence in Delhi, the new president has set the fate of the new president.

Sources say that Shah was in Lucknow to distribute appointment letters to newly appointed policemen, but apart from this, other cases have also been finalized. Sources say that when Adityanath met Shah at his residence in New Delhi to invite the Home Minister last week, the matter was finalized. Now, speculation is on who will be the new face to lead the party in the 2027 important assembly elections.
In Shah’s initial remarks, speculation has started again by calling Deputy CM Keshav Maurya a “friend” that it can be Maurya. The most prominent OBC face of the state BJP is popular among Maurya Party workers. He also respects seniority, earlier in 2017 when the BJP won UP after a two -decade gap, he was the state president and has served as the Deputy CM of UP twice since then. The party was moving towards choosing either OBC or Dalit as the new president, as the two communities were seen to be keeping pace with the opposition Samajwadi Party and the Congress in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Last year’s parliamentary elections saw a decline in the number of BJP seats, while the SP and Congress surprised everyone by performing effectively. Inner sources in the party say that OBCs can be given priority in view of the increasing political activities of the Samajwadi Party and the caste census announced by the central government. The names of OBC leaders like Union Ministers BL Verma and Pankaj Chaudhary (both important Kurmi caste) and State Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh (Lodh Rajput) are also in discussion. Among the Dalit leaders, ministers Baby Rani Maurya, Aseem Arun, former Union Ministers Ram Shankar Katheria and Vidya Sagar Sonkar are leading.
