The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled against the plea seeking re-conduct of the NEET-UG exam on paper leak allegations. In its order, the court said there was not enough evidence to indicate systematic leakage of question papers. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud was hearing petitions seeking re-examination of the NEET-UG exam held on May 5 this year on grounds of question paper-leak and other malpractices. Pronouncing the verdict, Chief Justice Chandrachud said the court had examined the data submitted by the National Testing Agency and a report by IIT Madras, which indicated there was no large-scale paper leak.

Supreme Court issues notice on petition against Governors of West Bengal and Kerala

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice on petitions filed by Kerala and West Bengal governments challenging the action of governors in delaying assent by sending the Bills to the President. Both states claimed that the respective governors have been sitting on eight Bills for more than a year without giving any reasons. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Paridwala and Justice Manoj Mishra issued notice to the secretaries of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the two governors. Senior advocate KK Venugopal, appearing for Kerala, said they are challenging the governor’s decision to send the Bills to the President for consideration.

SC extends ban on nameplates on Kanwar route

The Supreme Court has extended the interim stay on the government’s instructions to write names on shops and eateries on the Kavad route. The Supreme Court has maintained its interim stay order on the instructions to write names of Ujjain Municipal Corporation in BJP-ruled UP, Uttarakhand and MP. The court again said that no one can be forced to reveal the name. If someone wants to write the name outside the shop on his own will, then there is no stopping him. The UP government said that there is an order to write the name as per the central law. On this, the court said that then implement it everywhere. Uttarakhand said that we have implemented the law, in which disclosure of the name of eateries is necessary during festivals.

States have the right to levy taxes on minerals

The Supreme Court said in a decision that under the Constitution, the states have the right to impose tax on mines and mineral land. A bench of 9 judges headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court gave this decision by a majority of 8-1. The court said that the royalty paid on minerals is not a tax. This decision of the Supreme Court has brought great relief to the mineral-rich states of Jharkhand and Odisha. The states had requested the court to also decide on the recovery of the tax collected by the Center in the matter of minerals.

Shambhu border will not open now

The Supreme Court has directed to maintain the status quo at the Shambhu border between the states of Punjab and Haryana. Along with this, the apex court asked both the state governments to find ways and means to resolve the issue of farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border. The court said, there is a lack of trust between the farmers and the government. The court also suggested forming a committee to talk to the farmers protesting at the Shambhu border, which should include impartial people.
