Tensions between India and Maldives have increased since pro-China Muizzu came to power last year by defeating pro-India Ibrahim Mohammed Solih. Heading into the 2023 elections, Muizzu had promised to expel Indian troops stationed in the Maldives to help with humanitarian aid. In May, New Delhi replaced dozens of these soldiers with civilian experts. Relations were also strained in January when some Maldivian leaders attacked Modi for promoting India’s Lakshadweep archipelago to Indian tourists. Lakshadweep is off the south-west coast of the Indian mainland.

Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu was formally welcomed in the courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan and given a ‘Guard of Honour’. The President of Maldives arrived in India on Sunday evening along with his wife Sajida Mohammed and his country’s delegation. President Draupadi Murmu welcomed him at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present on this occasion. Later, Muizzu paid floral tributes at the mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat here. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh accompanied him to Rajghat.
