America’s newly elected President Donald Trump said that India imposes very high duties on some American products and he has once again talked about imposing similar high duties on Indian products in return.
Trump told reporters on Monday, “Generally speaking, if they impose tariffs on us, we also impose the same tariffs on them.” In almost all cases they are charging us, while we are not charging them.”
He made this comment in response to a question on a possible trade agreement with China. Trump said that India and Brazil are among the countries that impose very high tariffs on some American products.
“If India charges us 100 percent, won’t we get something in return?” Trump said at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. You know, they send cycles and we send them cycles. They charge us 100 and 200 percent. India charges very high fees. Brazil also charges very high fees. If they want to charge us, that’s fine, but we will charge them more this way.
Howard Lutnick, the nominee for Commerce Secretary for the incoming Trump administration, said that doing the same to others is going to be an important theme for the Trump administration. “You should expect to be treated the same way you treat us,” he said.
