Claim of Human Rights Watch

According to the victims’ testimony and video shared on social media by the rights group, the attacker was a member of Burkina Faso’s special force and pro -government militia, Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland. Security forces successfully drove the extremists
Charlie Verb, an independent analyst who focused on support activists, as well as Sahel, told how the attack started simultaneously at 6 am on Sunday at 6 am. The aid worker said, “JNIM fighters attacked eight areas simultaneously to disperse the Burkina Faso Air Force. The main attack took place in Jibo, where JNIM fighters controlled all the entry posts of the city before attacking military camps, especially an anti-terrorism unit camp.” Verb, who studied the video posted online, said that the attackers spent several hours in areas without air aid from Burkina Faso’s army, while in the past, security forces successfully drove the extremists in similar attacks on Jibo.
Sahel expert and senior research Fellow Wasim Nasar at the Saufan Center Security Think Tank said that the latest attack reflects the increasing power and widespread reach of JNIM in Burkina Faso. “The fact that Jibo was targeted, confirming the limits of freedom of JNIM within Burkina Faso.” Analysts warned that the military growth strategy, which includes large-scale recruitment of citizens in poorly trained militia, has increased inter-caste tension.
