Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has given a befitting reply to the questions being raised regarding her friendship with American tech billionaire Elon Musk. Meloni has told the Italian Parliament that she will not be influenced in areas where she has economic interests. Defending her friendship with Musk, she has said that she could be Elon Musk’s friend and head the first Italian government to enact a new law aimed at regulating private activity in space. Addressing a parliamentary session ahead of this week’s EU summit in Brussels, Meloni said she had independence and would not be influenced by sectors that belong to the billionaire’s vast economic empire, according to a report. She said she has ‘good relations’ with many people, but she ‘doesn’t take orders from anyone’.
After Meloni comes to power in Italy in 2022, he has held frequent meetings with Elon Musk, which are said to be aimed at attracting investment to the European nation. The Italian government recently approved a framework that will pave the way for foreign companies to operate in Italy. According to a report, this framework is likely to generate US$7.6 billion. Taking a dig at his predecessors, he said that previous Italian leaders who thought they had good relations, even friendship, with a foreign leader would have to follow others.
Meloni and Musk’s friendship has been a topic of discussion before also. Sk had denied a romantic relationship last September after photos of them admiring each other went viral. The two were at a black-tie event in New York where Musk presented Meloni with an award.
