The interim government of Bangladesh handed over the diplomatic note to India and sent back ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina, 77, has been living in exile in India since August 5, when she fled the country amid student-led protests that ended her 16-year rule. The Dhaka-based International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisers and military and civilian officials for crimes against humanity and genocide.

“We have sent a note verbale (diplomatic message) to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants him back here for the judicial process,” Adviser on Foreign Affairs or de facto Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain told reporters in his office. Alam said an extradition treaty already exists between Dhaka and New Delhi and Hasina can be brought back to Bangladesh under the treaty.
