Columbia’s presidential candidate and opposition senator Miguel Urarbe Turbe was shot and seriously injured during an operational rally in Bogota on Saturday. The incident took place at the El Golfito Park in the model neighborhood of Fontibon district of the city, where Uribe was addressing a crowd of supporters. Officials have not yet confirmed the identity or purpose of the suspect, while Uribe is hospitalized in critical condition.

Columbia Police Chief General Karlos Tianna said that Uribe was accompanied by ‘Councilman’ Andress Barios and 20 others at the time of the attack. He said that a minor allegedly involved in the attack was caught on the spot and his leg was injured and he is being treated. Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said that I have ordered the military and police forces and intelligence agencies of Columbia to investigate the entire case and explain the situation immediately. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X that the US strongly condemns the attempt to kill Senator Miguel Uribe and urged President Petro to take steps to rein in inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.

The incident has also been responded to from Latin America. Chilean President Gabriel Borik said that there is no place for violence in democracy. Ecuador President Daniel Noboa said that we condemn all kinds of violence and intolerance. Both presidents expressed solidarity to the senator’s family.
